Monteverde, Rome: a guide to the green neighbourhood next to Trastevere
Monteverde rises from the Tiber up towards the Gianicolo hill, right behind Trastevere. Romans love it for its greenery, its calm and its real neighbourhood life. It's where our apartment is, 800 metres from Roma Trastevere station.
Monteverde Vecchio and Monteverde Nuovo
The neighbourhood has two sides. Monteverde Vecchio, the older part, grew in the early 1900s on the slopes of the Gianicolo, with Art Nouveau villas and tree-lined streets.
Monteverde Nuovo developed later around Piazza San Giovanni di Dio, home to the local market: seasonal fruit and vegetables, with artichokes, puntarelle and chicory when in season.
The name ("green hill") comes from the greenish tuff stone that was quarried here as far back as Roman times.
Villa Doria Pamphilj and Villa Sciarra
Villa Doria Pamphilj is Rome's largest public park: 184 hectares of lawns, umbrella pines, fountains and Italian gardens around a 17th-century villa. It's 1.8 km from the apartment, perfect for a morning run or a picnic with the kids.
Villa Sciarra, in Monteverde Vecchio, is smaller and more intimate, with paths lined by statues of animals and satyrs, enclosed by the ancient Gianicolo walls.
The Gianicolo and its view over Rome
From the terrace at Piazzale Garibaldi on the Gianicolo you can see almost all of Rome: domes, bell towers and rooftops all the way to the hills. Every day at noon a cannon fires a blank shot, a Roman tradition.
The balustrade is engraved with the text of the 1849 Constitution of the Roman Republic. It's 2.3 km from the apartment.
In the footsteps of Pasolini and Escher
Monteverde has been home to artists and writers. Pier Paolo Pasolini lived at Via Giacinto Carini 45 and the area appears in his work.
The Dutch artist M. C. Escher lived on Via Poerio. A walk through these streets is a different way to discover Rome, far from the tourist trail.
