Trastevere, Rome: what to see and where to stay nearby, in peace

Trastevere is one of Rome's best-loved neighbourhoods: cobbled lanes, lively squares, ancient churches and trattorias on the bank of the Tiber, facing the historic centre. Our apartment is in Monteverde, just above it: Trastevere within easy reach, and quiet when you come home.

Piazza and Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere

This is the heart of the neighbourhood. The basilica is one of Rome's oldest churches, founded according to tradition by Pope Callixtus in the 3rd century. Its golden façade mosaics look their best at sunset.

In the evening the square and its fountain become a meeting point for Romans and visitors alike.

Santa Cecilia and the quieter side of Trastevere

Across Viale Trastevere lies the calmer part of the neighbourhood. The Basilica of Santa Cecilia holds the Last Judgment fresco by Pietro Cavallini.

Nearby, the church of San Francesco a Ripa houses Bernini's statue of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni.

Villa Farnesina and the Botanical Garden

Villa Farnesina, built in the 16th century by Baldassarre Peruzzi for the banker Agostino Chigi, is home to Raphael's Loggia of Cupid and Psyche. Check opening days and times before you go.

At the foot of the Gianicolo, Rome's Botanical Garden covers 12 hectares of plants and greenhouses: an hour of peace in the middle of the city.

Piazza Trilussa, Ponte Sisto and Tiber Island

Piazza Trilussa, with the fountain commissioned by Pope Paul V Borghese, is the evening meeting spot. From here Ponte Sisto crosses the Tiber towards Campo de' Fiori.

Further downstream is Tiber Island, the only island on the Tiber in Rome, perfect for a riverside stroll.

Porta Portese, the Sunday market

Every Sunday morning Porta Portese hosts Rome's most famous flea market: vintage, clothing, curious objects and a bit of everything. Go early and keep an eye on your wallet and phone in the crowd.

The Gianicolo, above Trastevere

From Piazza di Santa Maria you can walk up to the Gianicolo: from the terrace at Piazzale Garibaldi you can see almost all of Rome, and every day at noon the cannon fires. The same viewpoint is 2.3 km from our apartment.
