Staying in Monteverde: is it a good place to stay in Rome?

Guests often ask us this before booking, so here's an honest answer. In short: yes, if you want a quiet, green Rome lived in by Romans, with Trastevere within walking distance. Less so if you want to step out of the door and see the Colosseum. Below you'll find the pros, the cons and a comparison with other areas, written by hosts who welcome guests in Monteverde.

The short answer

Monteverde is a residential neighbourhood right behind Trastevere, on the slopes of the Gianicolo hill. It's quiet in the evening and busy by day with markets, bakeries and parks. The historic centre isn't on your doorstep, but it's a short ride away.

It's the right choice if you're staying at least three nights, travelling as a family or a group, and would rather sleep well than have bars under your window.

The pros: why choose Monteverde

Peace and quiet. The area is mostly home to Roman families, away from the nightlife. After a day of museums and ruins, you come back to calm streets.

Trastevere next door. Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is 2.4 km from our apartment: about half an hour on foot or a few minutes by bus. Have dinner in the lanes, then sleep in silence.

Real green space. Villa Doria Pamphilj, Rome's largest public park, is 1.8 km away and the Gianicolo terrace 2.3 km. With kids, it makes all the difference.

Easy arrival from Fiumicino. Roma Trastevere station is 800 m away: the FL1 regional train gets there from the airport in about 27 minutes, without going through Termini.

Local prices. Trattorias, cafés and grocers mostly serve residents, and you'll notice it on the bill.

The cons: what to know before you book

The Colosseum isn't around the corner. It's 4 km from our apartment and the Vatican is further still: for the big sights you'll use buses, trams or trains, or take long walks.

No metro. Monteverde is served by regional trains, buses and tram 8. In 2026 line 8 has track works and may run with replacement buses: check atac.roma.it before you travel.

Some hills. Monteverde Vecchio climbs towards the Gianicolo: lovely walks, but worth bearing in mind with strollers and suitcases.

Little nightlife. If you want bars open late below your window, Monteverde will feel too quiet: Trastevere suits you better.

Monteverde, Trastevere, the historic centre or Prati?

Trastevere is the most photographed neighbourhood, packed with trattorias and bars. Beautiful, but noisy at night, and many rentals are in historic buildings, often with stairs and small spaces.

The historic centre and Monti let you walk everywhere, from the Pantheon to the Colosseum. In exchange you pay more, face bigger crowds and often get less space.

Prati is elegant and quiet, close to the Vatican and served by metro line A. It's further from Trastevere and less lively in the evening.

Monteverde is the balance between calm and location: you sleep in a green, residential area, with Trastevere half an hour away on foot and the centre a short ride away.

Who Monteverde is right for

Families with children: parks nearby, quiet streets and an easier time finding apartments with several bedrooms.

Groups of friends or several families together: one apartment with several bedrooms often costs less than multiple hotel rooms.

Return visitors who want to live Rome like a Roman, away from the queues.

Travellers with a car: Monteverde is outside the restricted traffic zones (ZTL) of the historic centre and Trastevere, and there's free street parking near our apartment.

It's less suited to a one-night stay where you want to see as much as possible on foot.
